Immune Support
Naturopathic medicine offers a wide variety of treatment options to support immune function and decrease cold and flu frequency and severity.
The first step is to try to identify the specific reason for compromised immune status. Several factors can play a role including low vitamin, mineral and protein levels, poor sleep, a history of elevated stress as well as frequency of exposure to cold and flu viruses.
Suboptimal intake of iron, vitamin D, vitamin A, B vitamins and vitamin C can have a significant impact in some people and result in frequent colds. For others, inadequate sleep reduces the secretion of growth hormone required for proper immune protection. In addition, high levels of the stress hormone cortisol can play a role in depleting immune resources.
In addition, medicinal herbs are used to improve immune cell production and resistance to infection. There are many highly effective herbs used by Dr. Gupta to correct a compromised immune system. For example, astragalus is an immunomodulating herb that has its roots in traditional Chinese medicine and has long been used to prevent viral infections.
Dr. Gupta offers naturopathic solutions for some of the most common infectious diseases.
For some infections, naturopathic medicine may be a co-treatment along with medications, e.g. antibiotics. Naturopathic medicine may help with some of these infections:
- Virus infections, e.g. Influenza, EBV, CMV
- Bacterial infections, e.g. staph, strep
- Otitis media (OM) (ear infections – most commonly “serous OM” in kids)
- UTIs (urinary tract infections) and cystitis
- Bacterial vaginosis, chronic vaginitis (yeast infections), GBS
- H. Pylori
- C difficile
- Parasites, e.g. worms, amoebas, B. hominis
- Traveler’s diarrhea
